Vernon Named SoCon Athlete of the Week

Asheville, N.C. - Chantelle Vernon, freshman from Markham, Ontario, was named Southern Conference Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 23, 2002 due to her performance at the Second Appalachian Indoor Meet on January 19. In her second collegiate race, Vernon broke her second ETSU track record. At the Second Appalachian Indoor Meet, she ran a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 6.90 seconds in the 55m dash to break the previous school record of 7.12 set in 1992 by Beverly Dalton. In this race, Vernon defeated two All-Americans. In her first race as a Buc, Vernon broke the school record in the 60m dash with the time of 7.64 seconds, bettering the previous mark of 7.86 set by Tracie George in 1996.
