JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 1, 2003) - The Niswonger Foundation Track and Field Invitational concluded Saturday night, with ETSU sophomore Chantelle Vernon (Markahm, Ontario) breaking her own school record and winning the 60-meter dash (7.56). "Chantelle ran exceptional tonight in light of the fact that she has not trained in 10 days due to an injury," coach Michelle Byrne said. The Buccaneers faired well in the final day of competition with a first place finish in the men's 5000 meters, a second place finish in the men's mile run, and third place finishes in the men's shot put and women's high jump. "Everyone ran a season's best this weekend and that is all that I can ask for," said Byrne. "The team performed well and many personal bests were set." ETSU's James Grufferty (Glanmire, Ireland) finished first in the 5000 meters with a time of 15:05.54, while distance teammate, Brad Yewer (Newbury, England), finished second in the mile run (4:12.10). In the women's high jump, Buccaneer junior Cheryl Howard (Wyalusing, Pa.) placed third, jumping 1.65 meters, while ETSU's Chad Hyder (Kingsport, Tenn.), placed third, throwing 14.94 meters. In Saturday mornings 800-meter race ETSU's Kim Simmons (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Tiffany Collier (Atlanta, Ga.) placed first and second, respectively, finishing with times of 2:22.13 and 2:25.89. "We are moving in the right direction for the conference finals in three weeks," Buccaneer head coach Dave Walker said.
