ETSU Track and Field Earns Another NCAA Regional Qualifying Mark as the First Day of the SoCon Championships Concludes

Boone, N.C. (May, 1, 2004) - ETSU notched its fourth NCAA Regional Qualifying Mark with junior Nichola Cornish's (Spartanburg, S.C.) performance in the 400m dash. The Southern Conference Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Appalachian State began this Saturday in Boone N.C. Cornish joined three other Bucs when she finished first in the preliminaries of the 400m dash with a time of 54.60 just under the required mark of 54.61. Cornish will look to improve upon her time and claim the title in the finals on Sunday, while junior Chantelle Vernon (Markham, Ontario) will look to do the same in the 100m dash finals. Vernon advanced with a seventh-place preliminary finish mark with a time of 12.01 In the 800m, Tiffany Collier (Atlanta, Ga.), Jennifer Habbestad (Tampa, Fla.), and Kim Simmons (Knoxville, Tenn.) all advance to the finals. The three will attempt to duplicate their performance in the 800m from Indoor SoCon Championships in which the three swept the top three slots. Senior Kristin Truman (Johnson City, Tenn.) began the first events of the heptathlon on Saturday. She finished third in the high jump with a mark of 1.57m, third in the shot put with a mark of 10.16m, and second in the 200m dash with a time of 25.29. The remaining events will occur tomorrow morning. In the men's sprints, sophomore James Rainer (Alcoa, Tenn.) continued his strong performance in the 100m dash with a third-place preliminary mark of 10.56 to advance to Sunday's finals. Also advancing in the 100m for the Bucs was freshman Johnny Tucker (Spartanburg, S.C.), who finished in the preliminaries at sixth place. Rainer and Tucker also advanced in the 200m dash with times of 21.68 and 21.81 respectively. In the 400m hurdles, senior David Cabbler (Roanoke, Va.) finished fourth in the preliminaries with a time of 54.18. Freshman Joshua Hicks (Riceville, Tenn.) advance in the 800m to the finals with a time of 1:54.05. In the only distance race of the day, the 3000m, the Buc's Peter Dalton (Dublin, Ireland) finished fifth overall with a time of 9:40.96. The Buccaneers will look to continue their success as the SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Championship continues with the first events scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m.
