JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (July 18, 2003) - East Tennessee State has announced Canfield, Ohio native Anna Marie Ricciardi has committed to play women's basketball and track and field for the Buccaneers beginning with the 2003-04 seasons.
During her senior year at Western Reserve High School, Ricciardi was named first-team All-Ohio, Northeast Ohio Inland All-District Player of the Year and Salem News Player of the Year in women's basketball. She averaged 19 points, six rebounds, and six steals per game and finished her prep career as Western Reserve's all-time leading scorer.
"Normally, you don't find that quality of a student-athlete this late in the year," said ETSU head women's basketball coach Karen Kemp. "But through some of [head track and field coach] Dave Walker's contacts, we were able to find out that she was interested in both track and basketball at ETSU."
An accomplished track and field athlete as well, Ricciardi was two-time district, regional, and state high jump champion her junior and senior seasons en route to being recognized as the Top Female Track Athlete in Mahoning County in 2003. She owns numerous school records in multiple events including the 100-meter hurdles (15.9) and high jump (5-9).
"Anna Marie Ricciardi will be a tremendous asset to our program," said ETSU assistant track and field coach Michelle Byrne. "Coming in behind current senior Cheryl Howard (ETSU's 2002-03 Female Athlete of the Year), Anna Marie will give our team added depth in the high jump event. I'm excited to have the opportunity to work with such a versatile athlete to carry on the strong high jump tradition that we have here at ETSU."
Ricciardi was in the top 10% of her graduating class and is a member of the National Honor Society. She also participated in honors band, honors choir, SADD, and numerous other extracurricular activities during her time at Western Reserve.
