Bucs track and field adds three to 2006-07 roster

Wednesday, May 10, 2006

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 10, 2006) - The ETSU track and field team has recently announced three additions to the 2006-07 roster, including throwers Zachlynn Blackburn and Jarrod Burton, along with distance runner Victoria Currie.

Blackburn, from Tazewell, Va., will add a handful of accolades to the ETSU throwing contingent, as a three-time regional champion in the shot put and the discus.  Blackburn is also a four-time district winner in the shot and the discus, as well as a multiple time all-state selection.

Blackburn claimed all the school throwing records at Tazwell High School, in her four years of competition with the Bulldogs.  She was also a top volleyball and basketball player during her high school career.  In her high school career, Blackburn threw upwards of 40-feet in the shot put, and over 135 feet in the discus.

Burton, a standout lineman as well as a thrower, will also bring a wealth of high school accomplishments to the collegiate throwing circle.  Also a student at Tazewell High School, Burton is a multiple-time recipient of all-district, all-region, and all-state honors.

He has also been both a district and regional champion, boasting personal-best marks that have eclipsed 178 feet in the discus, and 56 feet in the shot.

"Jarrod and Zachlynn will make a world of difference to our throwing program here at ETSU," said ETSU throws coach Meg Stone.  "Both of these athletes will come into the program and have an immediate impact on the conference level, and they also have the ability to go on and develop into regional and potentially national qualifiers in their chosen event areas."

Currie, who will journey to Johnson City from Dumfries, Scotland, is a talented distance runner, having finished second in the Scottish U-20 Nationals at 800-meters.  A welcome addition to the ETSU cross country team, Currie finished third at the Scottish U-17 Cross Country Nationals in 2004.  She also won the Cambrian Schools Championship in 2004, and has competed for West of Scotland at the Celtic International Cross Country Championships.

Track and field season is still in full swing for ETSU, with several athletes competing at the Georgia Tech Invitational this weekend, before taking on the field at the NCAA Mid-East Regional, slated for May 26-27, in Knoxville, Tenn.
