CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Mar. 21, 2008) - Sophomore Nic Chernikow (Seymour, Tenn.) was the lone Buccaneer track and field athlete to open up the 2008 outdoor season this weekend as he competed in the decathlon at the Charlotte 49er Classic from the Irwin Belk Track.
Chernikow, the reigning conference champion in the event, placed fifth overall with a total of 5,360 points. Akron's Weston Lott won the grueling two-day competition as he finished with 6,421 points and beat out University of Virginia's Adams Abdulrazaaq by a plus-194 margin.
The Seymour, Tenn. native battled some cold weather conditions on Thursday and Friday, but still turned in a solid effort in the opening meet of the season. Chernikow bagged most of his points in the 100m and 400m as well as the long jump. The multis star scored 2,081 points in those three event areas as he finished fourth in 100m and high jump and then finished fifth in the 400m.
"Nic performed really well this weekend," commented assistant coach Mandy Virgets. "I am pleased with his overall efforts and hopefully he can build off this meet as the season progresses."
