James, Monal pace Bucs on day one at Clemson Invitational
Friday, January 08, 2010
CLEMSON, S.C. (Jan. 8, 2010) - Junior Mike James (Palm Bay, Fla.) and senior Duronal Monal (Belle Glade, Fla.) picked up right where they left off from a month ago in Boone, as both sprinters raced to titles in their respective events at the Clemson Invitational inside the Clemson Indoor Track.
James, who set a NCAA Provisional Mark in the 55m hurdles last month at the Appalachian State Invitational, flew his way to the title in the 60m hurdles on Friday night. The Palm Bay, Fla. native finished second behind Clemson's Charlton Rolle in the prelims, but James shaved time off that mark in the finals to capture the title with a time of 7.92.
Meanwhile, as James was making noise in hurdles, Monal was doing the same in the 60m. Like James, Monal was fresh off a first-place title in the 55m dash in Boone, and followed that up with a top finish in the 60m event tonight. The Belle Glade, Fla. native won the prelims with a time of 6.74 and capped off the finals with a win over Clemson's Warren Fraser, clocking in at 6.77.
"I was very pleased with both Mike and Duronal's performances tonight," commented associate head coach Michelle Byrne. "Both of them were coming off strong efforts in Boone and the long layover never affected them. Hopefully this is a good sign to come as the season builds towards the conference championships."
Other ETSU notables on Friday night included Caitlyn Epps' (Cookeville, Tenn.) fourth-place finish in the 5000m (19:15.89) and Ryan Beaver's (Virginia Beach, Va.) third-place performance in the triple jump. Beaver finished behind Georgia Tech's Alphonso Jordan and South Carolina's Marcus Stephens with a leap of 47-00.25 (14.33m).
Day two of the Clemson Invitational kicks off on Saturday with the men's and women's 3000m beginning at 11 a.m.
