Bucs set for Liberty Invitational, final meet before A-Sun Outdoor Championships

Friday, April 01, 2011

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 1, 2011) - With the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville rescheduled for the week of the A-Sun Outdoor Championships, ETSU takes on their final regular-season meet this weekend at the Liberty Invitational in Lynchburg, Va.

Assistant Coach Eli Sunquist said stiff competition makes for a great pre-conference meet.  "We are expecting some good competition across the board this weekend in all events," said Sunquist, adding that the Bucs will see athletes from perennial regional rivals like Appalachian State and Campbell, as well as major foes Wake Forest, Virginia, North Carolina and Penn State.

On the men's side this week, Sunquist looks for exciting things from Ifrish Alberg (Suriname, Paramaribo), who set a conference season-best 10.42 in the 100-meter dash at the 49er Classic.  "Ifrish should be exciting to watch this weekend," said Sunquist, "since the last few weeks of his training has been going very well."

Sunquist also said the provisional record watch is on for Desmond Pierce (Morristown, Tenn.) in the 800-meter, Ben Ronoh (Sotik, Kenya) in the steeplechase and Michael Lockhart (Dandridge, Tenn.) in the long jump.  Last week in Columbia, S.C., Pierce finished fifth in the 800, while Ronoh did not run the steeplechase but took second in the 1,500-meter run, and Lockhart cracked the top ten in the long jump.  In the men's field events, Matt Baum (Middletown, Md.) has a chance to break his own school record in the javelin, a top conference mark of 188-11 (57.58m) that he set at the 49er Classic.

Freshman sprinter Emani Harrison (Columbia, S.C.) follows a conference-best 11.98 finish in last week's 100-meter dash, where Sunquist hopes to see her score in Lynchburg.  Harrison enters the Liberty with a top-seeded time of 11.70.  In addition, Jasmine Ingram (Frederick, Md.) hopes to rebound individually in the 200- and 400-meter dashes - she takes a top seed into the 400 - while she continues to lead the women's relay squad.  ETSU is projected to finish atop the heap in the 4x100-meter with a seeded time of 45.98.

Sunquist also said he hopes to see good marks from his women's horizontal jumpers, as Lexie Burley (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Kelly Monteleone (Verona, Pa.) both finished in the top ten in last week's long jump.  Finally, Sunquist hopes Lili Allison (Oxford, Ala.) can follow up a solid finish in the hammer throw, where she holds an A-Sun top-five mark from last week at 159-06.50 (48.63m).
