ETSU sets seven personal bests at final meet of indoor season
BLACKSBURG, Va. (March 4, 2012) – Two weeks after hosting the Atlantic Sun Indoor Championships, the ETSU men’s and women’s track and field teams concluded the indoor season on a positive note by combining to set seven personal bests on Saturday at the Virginia Tech Last Chance meet inside the Rector Field House.
“I thought we had a really good meet,” ETSU assistant coach Eli Sunquist said. “We set a lot of personal bests and ended the indoor season in a positive way. We're now looking forward and are excited to get the outdoor season underway.”
ETSU’s best finish of the day came in the men’s 400m, where junior Tim O’Dell (Palm Coast, Fla.) took first place with a time of 48.13. The win was O’Dell’s second of the indoor season after taking the gold in the same event at the A-Sun Indoor Championships.
In the sprints, sophomore Emani Harrison (Columbia, S.C.) started her day with a time of 7.65 in the women’s 60m preliminaries. Harrison then moved on to the semifinals where she set a new personal best in the event by running a 7.56, and earning a spot in the finals. The Columbia, S.C., native improved upon her time once again by running the finals in 7.55 and finishing in fifth place. Harrison also competed in the women’s 200m, setting another personal best with a time of 24.69.
The men’s 60m witnessed a similar trend as sophomore Ifrish Alberg (Paramaribo, Suriname) ran the prelims in 6.85 to qualify eighth for the semifinals, before setting his personal best in the semis with a time of 6.76. The personal mark earned Alberg a spot in the finals, where he reset his personal mark with a fourth place time of 6.74.
Freshman Demeteria Edgecombe (Spartanburg, S.C.) competed in the 60m hurdles – two weeks after winning the event at the A-Sun Indoor Championships – and worked her way from the prelims to the finals with a fifth place finish of 8.63. Her best time of the day came in the semis, running the hurdles in 8.61.
In the distance events, senior Anja Claussnitzer (Chemnitz, Germany) set a personal record with a seventh place finish of 2:14.40 in the women’s 800m. Freshman Filip Jalovy (Modrice, Czech Republic) ran in the men’s mile, and set a new personal mark with a ninth place time of 4:13.93. Jalovy’s time now marks five-consecutive meets in which the freshman has posted a new personal record in the mile.
Sophomore local product Lexie Burley (Johnson City, Tenn.) – this year’s A-Sun Indoor triple jump champion – competed in the triple jump and improved on her conference-leading mark with a jump of 12.29m. The jump placed Burley ninth in the event and was a new personal best for the sophomore, who has seen each of her two best triple jumps come at the Rector Field House after setting her previous personal mark earlier in the season at the Virginia Tech Invitational.
The men’s triple jump saw junior Jason Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa.) and freshman local product Graham Boone (Johnson City, Tenn.) each earn a top-10 finish. Johnson broke his personal best – set in his gold medal performance at the A-Sun Indoors – with a mark of 14.96m to earn sixth place, while Boone took ninth at 14.16m.
ETSU also sent Jadon Short (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) to compete in the men’s long jump and Marek Navratil (Olomouc, Czech Republic) to compete in the men’s high jump. Short – the A-Sun Indoor Championships’ Most Outstanding Freshman and Most Outstanding Male Performer – continued his success in Blacksburg by taking fifth in the long jump with a 7.19m leap. Short set his personal best in the event of 7.40m earlier in the year at the Rector Field House during the Virginia Tech Invitational. Navratil took seventh in the high jump by clearing 2.03m.
The Bucs now look ahead to the outdoor season, which begins March 15-17 when ETSU travels to Charlotte, N.C. for the 49er Classic hosted by UNC Charlotte.
