Sophomore local product takes home third collegiate A-Sun weekly honors

MACON, Ga. (April 11, 2012) – After setting her personal record in the triple jump this past Saturday at the Tennessee Challenge in Knoxville, Tenn., sophomore Lexie Burley (Johnson City, Tenn.) was named Atlantic Sun Women’s Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday.

The honors are Burley’s first of the outdoor season and her second through 2011-12 competition after earning the weekly recognition on Jan. 18 of the indoor season. Burley was also named A-Sun Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 26 of her freshman season, making this her third collegiate weekly award.

On Saturday at Tennessee’s Tom Black Track inside LaPorte Stadium, Burley posted her best collegiate mark in the triple jump with a leap of 12.29m. The distance earned the former Science Hill High School standout second place in the event and increased her A-Sun lead to 0.30m above Jacksonville’s Shanique Walker. The jump also ranks Burley No. 44 in the East Region, and No. 73 in the NCAA.

Burley and the ETSU men’s and women’s track and field teams now look ahead to the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championships in Jacksonville, Fla., which take place Friday, April 20, through Saturday, April 21.
