Bucs hit up VT Final Qualifier
BLACKSBURG, Va. (March 1, 2013) – Eleven members of the ETSU men’s and women’s track & field teams will compete at the VT Final Qualifier on Saturday and get one last shot at qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
The meet begins at 9:30 a.m., and runs through 4:30 that afternoon at VT’s Rector Field House. All student-athletes participating are vying to be one of the top 16 in their respective events nationally, as those who are earn the right to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The NCAA meet will be held March 8-9 in Fayetville, Ark.
Competing for the Buccaneers on the men’s side are Ifrish Alberg (Paramaribo, Suriname), Rashad Campbell (Henderson, N.C.), Diego Lawrence (Waxhaw, N.C.), Tyler Stepp (Dandridge, Tenn.), FIlip Jalovy (Modrice, Czech Republic) and Jason Johnson (Philadelphia). Meanwhile, the women’s team will feature Kelly Monteleone (Pittsburgh), Lexie Burley (Johnson City, Tenn.), Courtney Kinlaw (Myrtle Beach, S.C.), Keturah Williams (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Emani Harrison (Columbia, S.C.).
“Everyone competing this weekend is either a conference champion or has an outside shot at qualifying for the NCAA’s,” Director of ETSU Track & Field/Cross Country George Watts said. “It’s going to be difficult to move up the ladder, but anything is possible.”
Alberg currently ranks No. 20 in the nation in the 60m dash, clocking a season-best time of 6.68 to take gold at last weekend’s A-Sun Indoor Championships. The time Alberg will be pushing for is 6.66 in order to move into the top 16, a mark which is currently held by South Carolina’s Damiere Byrd. Campbell will also look to match or better Byrd’s time. Campbell’s season-best in the event is 6.78, which he also ran at last weekend’s conference championships.
Lawrence and Stepp will compete in the long jump, looking to reach 7.63m to move into the top 16. That mark is currently shared by Arizona State’s Chris Benard and Florida’s Omar Craddock. Lawrence’s best distance of the season is 7.35m and Stepp’s is 7.51m. Stepp won the A-Sun Indoor title in the long jump last weekend.
In the 800m will be Jalovy, who clocked his best time of the season last weekend as well of 1:52.99 to take silver. The current 16th-place mark is 1:48.65, held by Western Kentucky’s David Mokone. Jalovy’s personal best in the event is 1:51.82, which he ran during the 2012 outdoor season.
The final men’s competitor is Johnson in the triple jump. The senior earned silver at the conference meet and has a season-best distance of 14.90m. He will have to improve be nearly a whole meter if he hopes to qualify for the NCAA’s, as the current No. 16 distance is 15.84m, held by Morris Kersh of Mississippi.
Monteleone and Burley will take their shot in the women’s triple jump. Monteleone is currently No. 42 in the NCAA after posting a distance of 12.54m to win the event at the A-Sun Indoor Championships. Meanwhile, Burley’s season-best leap is 12.22m, which she marked at the Niswonger Invitational. Currently, there is a three-way tie for 16th in the nation at a distance of 12.92m.
In the women’s long jump is Kinlaw. The senior transfer from Campbell University has a season-best distance of 5.78m, which helped her take bronze at the A-Sun meet. The current mark to beat is 6.24m, held by LSU’s Keri Emanuel.
The women’s 60m dash will feature Harrison and Williams. Harrison won the event at the A-Sun Indoor Championships, clocking her personal-best time of 7.49 in the finals. Williams’ best time is 7.55, which helped her take fourth at the A-Sun meet. Currently, the time to beat to qualify for the NCAA’s is 7.34, held by four different competitors from TCU, Auburn, UMBC and Texas A&M.
