Recognized for cumulative GPA and athletic performance during indoor season
MACON, Ga. (March 5, 2013) – The Atlantic Sun Conference released its 2013 men’s and women’s indoor track & field academic all-conference honorees on Tuesday, naming one ETSU woman and three men to the lists.
On the women’s side, junior Lexie Burley (Johnson City, Tenn.) was a unanimous selection for the second consecutive indoor season. On the men’s side, sophomore Filip Jalovy (Modrice, Czech Republic), junior Anders Ludvigsen (Odense, Denmark) and sophomore Chris Winkle (Gray, Tenn.) earned the honors and were all unanimous selections.
The Atlantic Sun Academic All-Conference teams recognize student-athletes who embody the conference’s mission of Building Winners for Life. All members of each team boast a 3.30 cumulative GPA or better and participated in at least half of their team’s meets, performing at a high athletic level. Each member has also been at his or her current institution for a minimum of one academic year.
Burley carries a 3.92 GPA, majoring in exercise science, and highlighted her indoor season by earning a bronze medal and third team all-conference honors in the triple jump. At the Hilton Garden Invitational in early February, Burley took gold in the triple jump for her lone event victory of the season. The Science Hill product also performed well in the other jumps, reaching personal bests in the high jump (1.68m) and long jump (5.62m).
Jalovy was named A-Sun Track Athlete of the Week twice (Jan. 16 and Jan. 23) during the 2012-13 indoor season and boasts a GPA of 3.60 in sport management. At the A-Sun Indoor Championships, the sophomore runner medaled three times, earning silver in both the 800m and men’s DMR while taking bronze in the mile. Jalovy also had a pair of victories to highlight an impressive season, winning both the 800m and mile at the 35th annual Niswonger Track & Field Invitational, and set personal bests in the mile (4:13.33) and 3000m (8:34.07).
Ludvigsen’s recognition stems from his 3.77 GPA in business and an indoor season that saw the Danish runner earn fifth place in both the 3000m and 5000m at the A-Sun Indoor Championships. His time of 8:38.11 in the 3K at the UAB Blazer Invite earned the junior a new personal best and sixth place in the event to begin the indoor season. Ludvigsen also ran at the Hilton Garden Invitational and Clemson Tiger Paw, earning fourth in the 5K and a top 10 in the 3K.
Winkle rounds out the men’s honorees, as the sophomore carries a 3.75 GPA in exercise science and had a great 2012-13 campaign competing in the pole vault. The Daniel Boone High School product reached new heights, clearing 4.60m at both the Niswonger and A-Sun Indoor Championships. Winkle’s Niswonger mark earned him second place, while his clearance at the A-Sun meet brought home a bronze medal and third team all-conference honors. Winkle was also fourth at the UAB Blazer Invite and sixth to begin the year at the Clemson Orange & Purple Winter Classic.
The A-Sun also recognized its men’s and women’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year, honoring USC Upstate’s Gilbert Kemboi on the men’s side and Lipscomb’s Dani Walker on the women’s side.
The Buccaneers now prep for the outdoor season, beginning next Thursday, March 14, in Charlotte, N.C., at the 49er Classic.
