ETSU aims to start anew in the outdoor campaign

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 13, 2013) – The ETSU men’s and women’s track & field teams will kickoff the outdoor season when they travel to Charlotte, N.C. to take part in the 2013 Charlotte 49er Classic at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Center March 14-16.

ETSU will not compete in Thursday’s heptathlon and decathlon but will participate in events starting on Friday, beginning with the women’s hammer throw at noon. The Buccaneers will continue the afternoon on Friday with both field and running competition throughout the day, consisting of a share of both running event prelims & finals as well as a number of field event finals. The meet will conclude on Saturday with additional running & field event finals as well.

Joining the Buccaneers will be nearly 50 other track & field squads including host Charlotte, Clemson, Cumberlands, Davidson, East Carolina, Gardner-Webb, King, North Carolina State, Pittsburgh, UNC-Asheville, USC Upstate, Winthrop and Wofford, among many others.

“We look forward to the start of the outdoor season this weekend at the Charlotte 49er Classic,” said Director of ETSU Track & Field/Cross Country George Watts. “We ended the indoor season in good health and I am optimistic that we will continue to improve on our current bests.”

The Buccaneers will be sending approximately 35 student-athletes to compete in a number of events. A handful of seniors will also begin the last outdoor season of their careers, highlighted by Kelly Monteleone (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Ifrish Alberg (Paramaribo, Suriname) who look to build off of their strong outdoor seasons of last year. Monteleone will aim to improve on the 1.52m personal best high jump of last outdoor season, while Alberg will look to continue his strong performances in the 100M and 200M dash in which he posted personal bests of 10.46 and 21.63, respectively.

“We have a very strong senior class and we wish them well in their last season of competition for the Bucs.” said Watts.

After a solid showing in the indoor season this year, including a top-15 team finish in the south region, the ETSU men’s track and field squad looks to continue the momentum into the spring. They will do so with the help of with sophomore K’Vonte Scott (Virginia Beach, Va.), who finished the indoor campaign ranked sixth in the south region in the heptathlon, and junior Tyler Stepp (Dandridge, Tenn.), who also stood sixth in the region, this time in the long jump.

The women’s track & field team also gets a chance to get off to a fresh start this outdoor season. Following their stellar performances this season indoors, expect the Buccaneers to be led outdoors by Lexie Burley (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Emani Harrison (Columbia, S.C.), who each came up short of qualifying at this year’s NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

“Our team goals remain the same,” said Watts. “We want to be in position to battle for a conference championship and qualify people to the NCAA championships.  I hope our first meet will set the tone for the remainder of the year.”
