Edgecombe sets a school record in the 100m hurdles

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 30, 2013) – The ETSU men’s and women’s track & field teams wrapped things up at the Raleigh Relays on Saturday, highlighted by various personal bests and a record-breaking performance on day two at the Paul Derr Track & Field Facility on the North Carolina State University campus.

Following notching a personal best yesterday in the prelims of 100m hurdles, Demetria Edgecombe (Spartanburg, S.C.) kicked it up a notch in the finals of the event as she achieved a new personal best and set an ETSU school record in the event with a time of 13.64 and a fourth-place finish.

“We had a better day with several personal bests and another school record by Dede Edgecombe,” ETSU Director of Track & Field/Cross Country George Watts said. “Her performance almost guarantees a trip to the first round of the NCAA Championships.”

After an overall so-so showing on day one at the Relays, ETSU bounced back with strong performances in both field and running events from the men and women. On the women’s side, in addition to Edgecombe’s record-setting performance, the ladies also turned in a solid day in relay events. The Buccaneers recorded a 45.78 time and third-place finish in the 4x100m from the foursome of Courtney Kinlaw (Myrtle Beach, S.C.), Keturah Williams (Alpharetta, Ga.), Karissa Bertling (New Port Richey, Fla.) and Emani Harrison (Columbia, S.C.).

On the men’s side, the Bucs did not feature any podium finishes but did manage to finish in the top six in a few events. In the triple jump, Jason Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa.) registered a leap of 14.71m and a sixth-place finish. The men found success in relay events as well with a fifth-place finish and a 7:34.55 mark in the 4x800m from the quartet of Ryan Jones (Apopka, Fla.), Filip Jalovy (Modrice, Czech Republic), Angus Baldwin (Tumbi Umbi, Australia) and Desmond Pierce (Morristown, Tenn.).

“The women’s sprinters/hurdlers had another solid day,” Watts said. “I was equally pleased with the middle and long-distance groups over the past two days. They continue to get better.”

ETSU will have ample time to prepare for the stretch run of the season as it will not be competing next weekend and will resume competition April 12-13 at the Sea Ray Relays on the University of Tennessee campus.

“The next two weeks are critical as we head to the midpoint of the season,” Watts said, “and close in on the conference and NCAA Championships.”
