First appearance in Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational since 2008

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (April 19, 2013) – As the ETSU men’s and women’s track & field teams inch closer towards the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championships in a few weeks, they will continue their preparation this weekend with a trip to Louisville, Ky. to compete in the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational on Friday at Cardinal Park on the University of Louisville campus.

After the most successful overall performance for the Buccaneers of this outdoor season last weekend at the Sea Ray Relays, ETSU hopes to continue the momentum this weekend at Louisville as championship season looms ahead. Recreating last week’s dominance of six victories in a highly-competitive field will be tough to do, but will be manageable against a smaller field in this one-day event. This appearance in the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational will be ETSU’s first showing in the event since April 19, 2008.

Competition will begin on Friday with the men’s javelin throw at 10:30 a.m., with field events continuing until roughly 4 p.m. As the field events approach their closing, running events will begin, starting with the women’s 4x100m relay at 3 p.m. The Invitational will close out with the men’s 4x400m relay which is set to begin at 6 p.m.

The Bucs will encounter a small group of competitors on Friday at the Invite with only three other participating teams including host Louisville, Southeast Missouri, and Central Michigan.

ETSU will be competing only a limited amount of student-athletes in this brief event out of necessity as it aims to give some competitors more work and to scale back the workload for others in an attempt to make sure each are ready for the upcoming championships.

“We are coming off a very good meet last week and we will limit our numbers to those that need a meet,” said Director of ETSU Track & Field/Cross Country George Watts. “We hope to focus on events that need some improvement without over competing our athletes.”

Among these student-athletes that will see action on Friday are two that had huge performances at the Sea Ray Relays in Tyler Stepp (Dandridge, Tenn.) and Verena Tobis (Hechingen, Germany). Stepp will try to continue his progression in the field, namely the long jump, after placing first in the event in Knoxville. Tobis will try to build off of her performance at the Relays as well after placing first in the discus throw. Both the men’s and women’s 4x100m relay teams will also shoot for improvement following standard showings last time out.

The usually consistent Kelly Monteleone (Philadelphia, Pa.) also hopes to hone her craft in the jumps, while Desmond Pierce (Morristown, Tenn.) looks to continue to be a force in sprints after providing a great performance as the anchor of the 4x800m men’s relay team who brought home gold last week in Knoxville. Katerina Vodova (Humpolec, Czech Republic) will also aim to continue to strengthen ETSU’s women’s jumps squad after taking the top standing in the long jump last week.
