Stepp earns Second-Team; Johnson and women’s 4x1 named honorable mentions
NEW ORLEANS, La. (June 13, 2013) – Six ETSU track & field student-athletes were named Outdoor All-Americans, as announced by the United States Track and Field Cross Country and Track and Field Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Picking up Second-Team honors for the Buccaneers was junior Tyler Stepp (Dandridge, Tenn.) for his efforts in the long jump at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championship last week in Eugene, Ore. The jumper notched a mark of 7.79 meters to advance to the final, and narrowly missed breaking into the top eight in the final to achieve First-Team All-America status. This honor caps off a wildly successful outdoor season for the transfer, including medaling gold at the 2013 Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championship and first-team All-Conference honors.
Senior Jason Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa.) ends his career at ETSU with an honorable mention All-America distinction. At the NCAA Championship, Johnson registered a mark of 15.44m in the triple jump to gain said status. Edging in to qualification at the Championship, the veteran etched his place as one of the top triple jumpers in the country to go along with medaling silver at the A-Sun Championship this spring and recording a second-team All-League selection.
The women’s 4x100m relay team of Courtney Kinlaw (Myrtle Beach, S.C.), Keturah Williams (Alpharetta, Ga.), Karissa Bertling (New Port Richey, Fla.) and Emani Harrison (Columbia, S.C.) defied the odds and too earned honorable mention All-America honors. This quartet snuck into qualifying for the NCAA Championship as the last team and proceeded to run a time of 45.06 in Eugene to achieve the award. The team continually reset its own ETSU school record in the event this outdoor season and medaled silver at this spring’s league outdoor championship. Consisting of only one senior, Kinlaw, the future in this event remains bright for ETSU.
These All-America selections are the first for the Bucs since Heidi Dahl accomplished the feat in 2009.
