ETSU has sights set on top-three finishes for both the men and women

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Feb. 20, 2014) – The ETSU men’s and women’s track & field teams will compete in the 2014 Atlantic Sun Indoor Track & Field Championships Friday and Saturday at the JDL Fast Track Indoor Track & Field Facility.

After both the men and women earned second-place finishes at the 2013 A-Sun Indoor Championships inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletics Center in Johnson City, the ETSU track & field program will aim to again have strong performances a year later in Winston-Salem. Last season, multiple solid showings were highlighted by four meet records broken by the Buccaneers. The ETSU women earned their best placing in the eight-year history of the A-Sun Indoor Championships with 127.50 points – their best-ever point total – to finish in second place behind eight-time defending champion Jacksonville. The ETSU men totaled 184 points to finish runner-up to champion Kennesaw State for the second year in a row.

This season, a number of ETSU student-athletes will have the opportunity to place in their respective events. Katerina Vodova (Humpolec, Czech Republic) will look to repeat as the women’s champion in the pentathlon where she posted a score of 3466 in 2013. Junior Tyler Stepp (Dandridge, Tenn.) will also look to defend his title in the men’s long jump where he scored a mark of 7.51 meters which was a personal best at the time last year.

In addition, senior Lexie Burley (Johnson City, Tenn.) appears to be a challenger for the top spot in the women’s triple jump where she has placed near the top in a number of meets this indoor season. Furthermore, freshman Brett Squibbs (Rock Hill, S.C.) is poised to be in the hunt for the event title in the men’s pole vault where the rookie has already broken the ETSU indoor record with a launch of 5.15 meters two weeks ago at the Samford Multi & Invitational.

ETSU has already competed at the JDL Fast Track Indoor Track & Field Facility twice this indoor season after participating in the JDL Kick-Off Classic on Dec. 7 and in the Hilton Garden Invitational on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.
