SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Feb. 10, 2016) – ETSU Track & Field’s Ashley Kessler (Knoxville, Tenn.) has been named General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for competition held Feb. 3-9, the league office announced Wednesday. Kessler is not only the second Track & Field student-athlete to be honored with this award but the fifth ETSU competitor overall during this academic year.
“Ashley is very deserving of SoCon student athlete of the week,” said ETSU Director of Cross Country and Track & Field George Watts. “Ashley bounced back from a tough meet from the previous week to contend for the pole vault title at the Buccaneer Track & Field Invitational. She has done very well academically throughout her career and is currently juggling a very difficult class schedule with training and competition. Her competitiveness in the classroom and athletically is a big reason for her success.”
Kessler won the pole vault at this past weekend’s Buccaneer Invitational with a league-best mark of 3.60 meters. The victory is Kessler’s sixth of her career.
In the classroom, Kessler holds a 3.72 grade point average as an elementary education major. She was a member of the SoCon Honor Roll and earned Academic All-SoCon honors as a junior.
Kessler and the rest of the Bucs will return to action Friday at the Samford Invitational, which is their final competition before the SoCon Indoor Championship Feb. 27-28.
