SPARTANBURG, S.C. (March 2, 2016) – ETSU Track & Field’s Kyra Atkins (Greer, S.C.) was named SoCon freshman of the year on the women’s side Wednesday by the league office. The awards were voted on by the coaches, which were based on performances at the 2016 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. Atkins is the first ETSU student-athlete to ever be named SoCon freshman of the year on the women’s side.
"I am very happy for Kyra to receive such a prestigious award," ETSU Director of Track and Field/Cross Country George Watts. "To score in three events is phenomenal for any athlete much less a freshman. She has an opportunity to be very good and hopefully this is just the beginning."
Atkins’ indoor season culminated with a pair of podium positions at the conference meet last weekend. The Greer, S.C., native scored a second-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles and finished third in the long jump.
In addition to her work last weekend, Atkins also notched a total of three top 10 finishes at the ETSU Invitational and the Buccaneer Invitational.
