Naperville, Ill. (Sept. 4, 2017) -- ETSU’s Triathlon team opened its 2017 schedule by placing three athletes in the top 25 and finishing 2nd in the team standings in the Central Regional Qualifier on Monday in Naperville, Ill.
Morgan James (Clovis, Cal.) was 10th, with a total time of 1:07:55.2. Annika Cotner (Muskegon, Mich.) 16th at 1:10:30.9, and Hope Zimmerman (Crown Point, Ind.) was 25th at 1:12:49.2. Carly Brewington (Coral Springs, Fla.) took part in the swimming portion of the event.
All four of ETSU’s triathletes on Monday were freshmen. Overall, 51 entered the competition in suburban Chicago.
“I’m very proud of the team,” said head coach Janine Pleasant. “Each athlete gave 100% and raced smart. The finish qualifies us to bring our entire team to the National Championships.”
James paced the Bucs in the swimming (10:21.0) and running (20:06.4) sections. Zimmerman was quickest in the bicycling (36:17.5).
In swimming, James finished 8th, Cotner 9th (10:22.8), and Zimmerman 25th (10:58.7).
In bicycling, Zimmerman was 20th, James 22nd (36:38.4) and Cotner 23rd (36:42.0).
In the run, James finished 9th, Cotner 17th (22:25.1) and Zimmerman 26th (24:43.6)
The Central Regional Qualifier was the first of four events on ETSU’s schedule this fall. Up next is the Anchor Splash Triathlon in Oak Ridge, Tenn. on Sunday, September 17th. The National Championships is is Saturday, November 4th, in Tempe, Ariz.
