DUBLIN, Va. (Sept. 8, 2018) – With its first-ever home event just around the corner, the ETSU triathlon team got in a tune-up at the season-opening Claytor Lake Sprint Triathlon on Saturday at Claytor Lake State park in southwest Virginia.
“This wasn’t an NCAA race,” said head coach Janine Pleasant. “We treated it as a practice, to shake out any issues we might need to fix before next weekend. I told the team to swim hard, build the bike race and then go 80% in the run. We didn’t go all-out, with another big race in a week, but the results show we were still quite competitive.”
ETSU will host the “Beware the Bear” sprint triathlon at the Wautauga River Boat Dam in Elizabethton, Tenn. on Sunday, September 16. It will also serve as the NCAA’s Central Regional qualifier, where college teams will look to secure a berth in November’s National Championship.
On Saturday, three Bucs finished in the top four among female competitors, and four in the top eleven.
Lane McDonald (South Bend, Ind.) made a splash in her collegiate debut Saturday. The freshman was the top finisher among females and 6th in the entire field, with a time of 1:09:29.48 – more than four-and-a-half minutes ahead of any other woman in the field.
Sophomore Annika Cotner (Muskegon, Mich.) was 3rd among females at 1:16:40.46. Freshman Cameron Seeley (Blacksburg, Va.) finished 4th at 1:17:10.65, and was tops among women age 16-19.
Sophomore Hope Zimmerman (Crown Point, Ind.) crossed the line 11th in 1:24:11.24, and 3rd among women 16-19. Freshman Skylar Dykes (Mount Carmel, Tenn.) was 4th in the 16-19 age group, covering the 500 meter swim, 12.5 mile bike race and 5K run in 1:34:27.85.
Sophomre Carly Brewington (Coral Springs, Fla.) took the Aquabike division with a time of :59:02.0.
“We saw a few things we can refine between now and the race next Sunday,” Pleasant said. “We invite everyone to come out to our first home race – teams from all over the country will be here, and we’re excited for the opportunity.”
