TEMPE, Ariz. (Nov. 16, 2018) –ETSU’s final race of the fall was the most prominent of the fall with another top-three finish with third place at the USA Triathlon National Championship. Lane McDonald (South Bend, Ind.) took the top spot for the Bucs, she finished fourth overall with a time of 1:07:42.
McDonald completed the race just 21 seconds behind Leah Drengenberg who finished in third place. Faith Powell (Columbia, Tenn.) finished less than a minute outside the top-10 with a time of 1:10:20 for 12th place.
Rounding out the top 15 was Lindsey Batkiewicz (Johnston, Iowa) who crossed the finish line less than a second ahead of her teammate Holle Guntz (Indianapolis, Ind.) who finished 19th overall. Cameron Seeley (Blacksburg, Va.) and Katelynn Elliot (Porter, Texas) were neck-and-neck throughout the race and finished within a minute of each other for 22nd and 24th place respectively. Carla Garcia (Miami, Fla.) rounded out ETSU’s contingent with a time of 1:17:09.
“I am very pleased with our team’s effort today, everyone raced hard and smart,” said Janine Pleasant. “Lane had an excellent race coming in fourth. We have tremendous growth potential and we will come back next year even stronger!”
Taking home their four straight Division I title were the hosts Arizona State, the Sun Devils claiming four of the first six finishers, while South Dakota narrowly edged ETSU for second. The third-place finish for the Bucs is the fourth time in a row they’ve finished in the top three at nationals, while they also conclude fall of 2019 finishing in the top three in every one of the events they competed in.
Individually, Kyla Roy (ASU) took the top spot with a time of 1:05:22, 30 seconds in front of the next best finisher.
ETSU’s calendar year is done, but they resume competition in the spring, a trip to Clermont, Fla. just over four months from now marking the front half of their spring season.
