Cougars Edge ETSU, 5-4, in Series Finale

Charleston, SC -- Brett Spivey's single scored Mitch Miggenburg from second base capping a three-run Cougar eighth as the College of Charleston rallied for a 5-4 win over East Tennessee State in Southern Conference college baseball action before 354 at Patriots Point Field on Sunday.

Charleston (9-6, 2-1 SoCon) took a 2-0 leading in the bottom of the fourth on Greg Alden's two-run homer to left, his first of the season.

ETSU (4-10, 1-2) answered with four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Tim Turner's run scoring single scored Kirk Keithley making it 2-1, and Scott Rose followed with a two-run homer to left giving the Bucs a 3-2 advantage. Nathan Copeland's sacrifice fly capped the scoring for ETSU.

Trailing 4-2 entering the eighth, Hank Stepleton led off with a triple and scored on Matt Lauderdale single to left cutting the margin to 4-3.

Lauderdale moved to third on Miggenburg's single to left center, and scored on Ronny Marmol's sacrifice fly to right field.

Miggenburg, who had moved to second on Marmol game-tying fly out, scored when Spivey lined a single into left center for the game-winner.

Lefthander Shawn Holland (2-0) picked up the win working 3 2/3 innings of hitless relief with one walk and four strikeouts. Andy Hutchings earned his team-leading fifth save of the season working the ninth allowing a walk with one strikeout.

Matt Nunley (0-1) suffered the loss in relief for ETSU allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits and a walk in 2 1/3 innings of work.

Charleston is action again on Tuesday when it plays host to Detroit in a 1:00 start at Patriots Point Field.
