Hoilman captures A-Sun home run crown as Bucs down Paladins 12-9

GREENVILLE, S.C. (April 13, 2011) - The ETSU baseball team picked up its sixth straight win as the Bucs downed Furman 12-9 Wednesday night at Latham Field in Greenville, S.C. Senior Paul Hoilman (Johnson City, Tenn.) became the Atlantic Sun career home run leader in the contest with his 59th homer since 2008.
Junior Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) was phenomenal for the Bucs (22-9, 11-5 A-Sun) going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with four RBI as he only needed a triple for the cycle. Reeder also took over the national lead in saves with 13 on the year as he threw a scoreless ninth to close out the game.
ETSU outhit Furman (17-18, 7-7 SoCon) 12-11 as the Bucs saw three starters post multiple hits.
Freshman Logan Rice (Erwin, Tenn.) earned is first win as a Buccaneer after throwing 2.1 innings of relief allowing four runs on four hits with three walks and a strikeout, while Matt Plate suffered the loss for the Paladins after giving up two runs (one earned) on a hit and a walk in 1.2 innings.
Furman got things going in the bottom of the first as the Paladins grabbed a 1-0 lead on a Reese Wade RBI single.
The Bucs got on the board in the top of the third as Reeder singled in Corey McPherson (Johnson City, Tenn.) from second. Hoilman gave ETSU a 4-1 lead in the next at-bat on his eighth home run of the season as he crushed a 3-1 pitch over the fence in left for a three-run homer.
The Paladins evened the contest at 4-all in the bottom half of the frame plating three runs on three hits highlighted by a RBI double by Aaron Thompkins.
After Furman added a run in the bottom of the fourth, Reeder put ETSU back in front 6-5 in the fifth on his A-Sun leading 12th home run.
In the top of the sixth, the Buccaneers extended their lead to 9-5 after RBI doubles by Andrew Green (Powell, Tenn.) and Reeder and a sac fly by Derek Niesman (Wellington, Fla.).
Senior Dylan Pratt (Johnson City, Tenn.) came around to score on a Paladin throwing error in the top of the seventh to make the score 10-5.
Furman cut the Buccaneer advantage to 10-9 in the bottom half of the seventh as the Paladins scored four runs on three hits and an ETSU error.
The Bucs added two insurance runs in the top of the eighth as both Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Reeder came in to score on two wild pitches by John Paterson.
Senior Bo Burton (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Reeder would combine to throw a scoreless eighth and ninth to close out the game for ETSU.
