RALEIGH, N.C. (May 8, 2011) - After taking the first two games of the series, the ETSU baseball team fell 8-5 to North Carolina State in the series finale at Doak Field on Sunday afternoon to end an eight-game win streak for the Buccaneers.
Cory Betterson (Atlanta, Ga.) had a game-high three hits for ETSU (30-16, 12-10 A-Sun), while Matthew Scruggs (Knoxville, Tenn.) was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.
Senior Bo Burton (Kingsport, Tenn.) suffered the loss for the Bucs falling to 2-4 after giving up six runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings of work. D.J. Thomas earned the win for N.C. State (27-21, 11-13 ACC) after throwing 1.1 scoreless innings of relief to go to 2-1 on the year.
Danny Canela and Tarran Senay led the Wolfpack offensively as they both went 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run and a pair of RBI.
Derek Trent (Kingsport, Tenn.) gave the Bucs an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as he singled in Andrew Green (Powell, Tenn.) from third for his fifth RBI of the series.
The Wolfpack tied the contest at 1-all in the bottom half of the frame on a RBI single by Canela.
Senay gave N.C. State a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second as he led off the inning with a solo home run to right. Later in the inning, John Gianis came in to score on a ball hit to second by Chris Diaz to make the score 3-1.
In the top of the third, Derek Niesman (Wellington, Fla.) led off the inning with a triple to left center to increase his hitting streak to eight games. Two batters later, Bo Reeder (Cookeville, Tenn.) doubled to right center to score Niesman and cut the Wolfpack advantage to 3-2.
N.C. State plated three runs on five singles in the bottom of the third to jump out to a 6-2 lead.
The Bucs threatened in the top of the fourth as ETSU loaded the bases after singles by Dylan Pratt (Johnson City, Tenn.), Scruggs and Betterson, but the Wolfpack pitching staff would induce a fly out and pop out to end the inning unscathed.
Canela added to the N.C. State lead in the bottom of the seventh as he ended a streak of 13 straight Wolfpack batters retired with a solo homer to right to make the score 7-2. After an Andrew Ciencin single, Senay doubled to left scoring Ciencin to give North Carolina State a six-run edge.
Scruggs answered for the Buccaneers in the top of the eighth with a three-run homer to left for his ninth home run of the season to cut the N.C. State lead to 8-5.
Wolfpack closer Chris Overman came into the game in the eighth and held the Bucs hitless in the final 1.1 innings to pick up his fifth save of the year.
The Bucs are back in action tomorrow at 1 p.m. as they host UNC Asheville in a non-conference game at Cardinal Park. Fans who bring a business card to the game will receive admission for only a Buc ($1).
