Senior right-hander tosses third shutout and records career-high eight strikeouts

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 12, 2013) – Senior Kerry Doane (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) struck out a career-high eight hitters and tossed his third shutout of the season, as the ETSU baseball team blanked Lipscomb, 8-0, on Friday night at Thomas Stadium.

Doane – who pushed his NCAA leading complete games mark to seven (in nine starts) – was given all the offense he needed to work with in the bottom of the first as ETSU plated two runs in the inning. Yet again, the senior righty attacked the strike zone as 81 of his 122 pitches were strikes and Doane improved to 7-1 on the season, while lowering his earned-run-average from 2.22 to 1.96 on the campaign. Overall, Doane has tossed four consecutive complete games and jumped into second all-time in the Buccaneer history books for shutouts in a season and in a career with three. The Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. native is one shutout away from tying Jeff Andrews’ mark for both records, which was set in 1980.

Meanwhile, at the plate, the Blue and Gold pounded out 12 hits, while two of Lipscomb’s five hits came in the ninth inning. Junior Dylan Tritsch (Boca Raton, Fla.) led the Bucs with a three-hit night, while Andrew Green (Powell, Tenn.), Andrew Lasure (Stanford, Ky.), and Trey York (Knoxville, Tenn.) all totaled two-hit efforts. York – who reached base three times – finished with one double, one triple and an RBI, and Lasure singled, doubled, and scored two runs. Green’s two hits went for singles, while he also scored a run and swiped his 64th career stolen base – moving him one shy of tying Stephen Douglas (2004-06) for second all-time on the ETSU career leaders list.

With the win, the Bucs extended their Atlantic Sun Conference winning streak to four straight games and improved to 19-12, 8-5 in A-Sun play. Lipscomb – who had won two of its last three coming into the series – dipped to 12-23, 3-7.

The Bucs wasted little time making a dent in the scoreboard as the Blue and Gold plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take the early 2-0 lead. Jeremy Taylor (Fayetteville, Ga.) led off the inning with a double down the line in left and later scored on Clinton Freeman’s (Jonesborough, Tenn.) sacrifice fly RBI to center. Then, with two outs and the bases loaded, Alex Reynolds (Johnson City, Tenn.) worked a six-pitch walk to push across Tritsch – who reached on a bunt single following Taylor’s double – giving ETSU the two-run cushion.

In the third, ETSU took advantage of a costly two-out error by Lipscomb’s Drew Adams in left to extend its lead to, 5-0. Prior to the Bisons blunder, Freeman led off with a double and scored on Lasure’s single to center. From there, Lasure was called out when Chris Riopedre (Miami, Fla.) hit into a fielder’s choice to third, but Riopedre scored from second when Adams dropped a routine two-out pop fly off the bat from Reynolds and the senior third baseman charged home for the second unearned run of the frame on York’s RBI double to left-center.

Once again, another leadoff double paid huge dividends for the Blue and Gold in the fifth, as Lasure reached on a two-bagger to right and later scored on Reynolds’ RBI groundout, making it a 6-0 score.

The errors continued to haunt the Bisons as the Bucs plated two more unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh when Mason Hershey’s (Altoona, Pa.) two-out single up the middle scored Lasure and Green from second and third – pushing ETSU’s lead to, 8-0.

With the Buccaneer offense exploding, Doane kept the Bisons bats in check for the entire night.

After giving up a one-out hit to Griffin Moore in the third, Doane retired 12 of the next 14 Lipscomb hitters, while recording six of his eight strikeouts during the stretch until Moore ended the hitless run with another one-out single in the eighth.

Then, in the ninth, Adams led off the inning with a double to left and moved to third on Tyson Ashcraft’s single, but Doane induced Joey Cecere into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play to complete the shutout.

Josh Cotham suffered the loss (1-3) for Lipscomb as the righty was charged with six runs (four earned) on eight hits in four innings of work. Meanwhile, Moore had two of the Bisons five hits on the night.

Game two of the series begins Saturday at 2:05 p.m., as junior righty Logan Rice (Erwin, Tenn.) takes to the hill for the Bucs, while Lipscomb counters with red-shirt sophomore right-hander Hunter Brothers.
