CHARLESTON, S.C. (May 18, 2015) – On the eve of the Southern Conference Championship, the league office released its postseason honors and ETSU had a pair of student-athletes receive all-conference accolades. Junior second baseman Trey York (Knoxville, Tenn.) was named second team All-SoCon, while catcher Hagen Owenby (Knoxville, Tenn.) landed all-freshman team honors on Monday.
York, who has started all 55 games at second base for the Blue and Gold, leads the SoCon in triples (6), ranks fourth in runs scored (54), is tied for fourth in hits (74) and total bases (128), ranks fifth in batting average (.356), sixth in on-base percentage (.436), seventh in RBI (51), and eighth in slugging percentage (.615). The Buccaneer slugger also leads ETSU with 25 multi-hit games and is tied for the team lead in multi-RBI games (14). York was named SoCon Player of the Month (February), received a pair of conference player of the week honors, and was named Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week after a dominating performance to open the 2015 campaign. In addition, York was placed on the Golden Spikes Award midseason watch list back in April. The Knoxville, Tenn. native registered at least one hit in 42 games this season, including seven three-hit games which tied a career high. York became just the sixth player in program history to record two triples in one game (at USC Upstate, Feb. 22) and belted two home runs against Eastern Kentucky on Feb. 14 at Thomas Stadium. The Buccaneer junior hit safely in his first 11 games and reached base in the first 21 contests of the season.
Owenby has been a solid addition to the Buccaneer lineup in his rookie season as he hit .311 (52-167) with 10 doubles, seven home runs, 26 runs and 38 RBI in 46 starts for the Blue and Gold. The Knoxville, Tenn. native paced the Buccaneers in SoCon play where he was 25-for-67 (.373) with four doubles, four home runs, 12 runs and 20 RBI in 18 starts. Owenby posted 15 multi-hit and 14 multi-RBI games this season, while recording four hits in the second game of a doubleheader against Mercer (March 21) and driving in three runs three times. The Buccaneer catcher had at least one hit in 32 games, while registering a hit in all but three conference games – including seven multi-hit games against SoCon foes. Owenby received SoCon Player of the Week honors after helping lead ETSU to a series win over Wofford this past weekend.
Mercer, the regular season champions, garnered Player (Kyle Lewis) and Coach of the Year (Craig Gibson) honors, while James Reeves of The Citadel was named Pitcher of the Year and Samford’s Austin Edens was pegged Freshman of the Year.
The Bucs begin play in the SoCon Championship on Tuesday morning when ETSU faces The Citadel in the play-in game. First pitch is set for 10 a.m., at Riley Park in Charleston, S.C.
