JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Dec. 7, 2015) – The ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics continued its holiday tradition as the Buccaneers held the 15th annual “A Buccaneer Christmas” event on Monday night inside the MSHA Athletic Center.
Over 60 children from Johnson City Coalition for Kids sites were treated to a special night including activities such as meeting Santa Claus, opening gifts, and mingling with ETSU student-athletes.
ETSU Director of Athletic Facilities/Operations Lee Morrow is in charge of setting up this event, and he knows how special this night is not only for the children but also for the student-athletes.
“We started the Buccaneer Christmas event 15 years ago, and it has become an annual tradition,” said Morrow. “A donor provides the gifts, we bring out Santa, and it’s a fun evening for all of us. Our student-athletes do a great job interacting with the young kids. It doesn’t get any better than this.”
Senior cheerleader Lara Byerley (Johnson City, Tenn.) looks forward to this night every year.
“This is my fourth year helping with A Buccaneer Christmas, and it’s something I look forward to every year,” said Byerley. “It’s a good way to give back to the community. To see the children be able to receive gifts from student-athletes and the university means more to them than we can ever imagine.”
The ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics takes pride in its community service activities and strives for 100 percent participation from its student-athletes, coaches and administrators throughout the year.
