Clemson, S.C. (March 1, 2021) — On Tuesday, it will have been exactly 53 weeks since the ETSU Baseball team handed the Clemson Tigers their first loss of the 2020 season. This week, the Bucs are looking for back-to-back wins over the Tigers for the first time since 1980. First pitch of the contest is slated for 4 p.m. inside Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
RHP Tucker Rogers vs. RHP Carter Raffield
The Bucs are 5-2 to start the season after a series victory over Northern Kentucky and a series sweep over UNC Ashevile. The Bucs entered 2021 after a 12-3 record in 2020. The Bucs are led by head coach Joe Pennucci who is in his fourth season at the helm of Buccaneer baseball. The 43-man roster consists of 20 newcomers and 12 true freshmen.
ETSU’S LAST TIME OUT
The Bucs swept UNC Asheville over the weekend for their first sweep of the season. ETSU outscored UNCA 21-6 in the three-game series. The Bucs tallied 11 extra-base hits over the weekend and drew 18 walks. ETSU’s pitcheres held just a 1.33 ERA against the Bulldogs and struck out 25, walking nine.
FRESH AND READY TO GO
ETSU senior righty, Tucker Rogers is set to step foot on the mound for the first time this season. Rogers will get the nod for the Bucs on Tuesday afternoon and is one of the last pitchers to throw this season for Coach Pennucci’s squad. Rogers got the win in ETSU’s 5-3 win over the Tigers last year and finished 2020 with a 1-1 record and a 6.75 ERA. In his outing against Clemson last year, Rogers tossed five innings, allowed six hits, two earned runs and struck out three. Clemson’s starting pitcher, Carter Raffield also has not pitched in 2021. Last season, he was 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA as a true freshman.
A year ago, the Bucs defeated the Tigers in Clemson for the first time since 1981. ETSU won 5-3 in a game that saw 25 hits and nine walks. The Bucs outhit the Tigers 14-11 and drew eight walks compared to Clemson’s one. Tucker Rogers got the nod and the win for Coach Pennucci’s squad as he tossed five innings and allowed just two runs and didn’t walk a batter. Offensively, former first basemen, Noah Hill and current players Jake Lyle and David Beam all recorded multi-hit games. It was Beam’s RBI-double in the fifth that put the Bucs on top 3-2 to line up Bucs’ victory.
A POWERFUL STREAK
ETSU has defeated a Power-5 team in 13 straight seasons dating back to 2008. The Bucs have defeated five ACC teams, two SEC schools, three Big 10 opponents and Penn State from the Big 12. The streak is the second-best in the SoCon with UNCG leading the way with 15 consecutive seasons defeating a Power-5 opponent.
THE BUCS’ BULLPEN
ETSU’s ‘pen has tossed 33.2 innings this season and has allowed five runs over that span to hold a 1.36 ERA. The Bucs’ relievers have struck out 27 batters and walked just five.
The Bucs are 7-21 against Clemson all time and are 1-1 under Pennucci. The Bucs won the last meeting 5-3 in 2020, while it is just one of five victories for ETSU in Clemson. Clemson is 19-5 at home against ETSU and carries the longest win streak in the series at 11 games (1985-2019).
Clemson is 3-2 entering the weekend after two one-run losses to No. 16 South Carolina. Clemson began the season 3-0 with a sweep of the Cincinnati Bearcats at home. As a team, Clemson is hitting .259 led by Dylan Brewer’s .400 batting average. Clemson’s pitching staff has a 3.06 ERA with 61 strikeouts and 12 walks. Of the 47 hits the staff has given up, just 10 have gone for extra bases.
