JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (June 23, 2022) – The East Tennessee State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Thursday plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX. Today, June 23, 2022, marks the 50th anniversary of Title IX being passed by Congress and signed into law by President Richard Nixon.
“Title IX is significant for numerous reasons as it has helped progress our nation forward as we work to protect against gender discrimination,” said Lauren Aksionoff, Associate Athletic Director for Academic Services/Senior Woman Administrator. “Title IX made it possible for women to participate in college athletics. The push for investment in women college sports must continue in order to provide quality programs, break down barriers, and promote inclusivity and equal opportunities.”
ABOUT TITLE IX
Title IX was signed into law in 1972, and states that “no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.”
