Gent records three hits, Awtry goes yard twice in setback

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 4, 2023) – After starting the series with a 7-4 win yesterday, ETSU baseball came up on the wrong end of an 11-3 loss to Marist to even the series at Thomas Stadium. The rubber match is set for tomorrow at 1 p.m.

Both teams came out swinging the bats — combining for 21 hits — but a late-inning surge by the Red Foxes (1-7) propelled them to their first win of the season. Meanwhile, ETSU falls to an even 5-5 record despite a 10-hit day.

Half of the 10 hits came from the duo of graduate catcher Marshall Awtry (Wilmington, Del.) and junior second baseman Noah Gent (Corryton, Tenn.), as Awtry hit his third and fourth home runs of the season and Gent ripped two singles and a double to finish 3-for-4 at the plate.

The game started as a pitcher’s duel between ETSU’s Austin Emener (Macon, Ga.) and Marist’s Brian Yetter. The Red Foxes snuck a pair of runs before the fifth inning, but ETSU had its answer in the sixth as Awtry smashed one off the light pole in left-center.

Emener left a close game after 4.1 innings and 61 pitches, totaling six strikeouts without a walk.

Marist did its damage after that with nine runs in the final three innings. ETSU tallied one run each in the eighth and ninth with a long ball to the center field batter eye from Awtry and an RBI single by Cameron Sisneros (Littleton, Colo.) to bring home Garett Wallace (Sanford, Fla.) in the last frame.

Meanwhile, the Bucs were able to find base runners, but grounded into four double plays and stranded three others.

Sophomore outfielder Tommy Barth (Brecksville, Ohio) went 2-for-4 on the day, while senior DH

Jared Paladino (Levittown, N.Y.) and junior right fielder Nick Iannantone (Plainfield, Ill.) added a hit each.
