Pirates win series; ETSU slips to 6-1 in Sunday games this season

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 2, 2023) – The ETSU baseball team’s perfect record in get-away games ended on Sunday at Thomas Stadium, as the Bucs let one get away in an 11-4 loss to Seton Hall in the rubber match of a three-game series.

With today’s setback, ETSU suffers a Sunday loss for the first time since last May — ending a seven-game Sunday win streak dating back to last season. Six of those wins came this season against Toledo, Georgia Southern, Marist, Winthrop, Tennessee Tech and Samford by a combined score of 54-22.

The Bucs started well with a 2-1 lead after the fourth inning — aided by a two-run homer off the bat of Cameron Sisneros (Littleton, Colo.) in the opening frame and four solid innings from starting pitcher Nathanial Tate (Manchester, Tenn.) on the mound. ETSU ran into some trouble in the fifth, as Seton Hall tallied five runs and scattered six more in the last four innings.

The Bucs tried to spark a rally in the ninth inning as Marshall Awtry (Wilmington, Del.) hit a two-RBI single with the bases full to bring home Noah Webb (Kodak, Tenn.) and Ashton King (Knoxville, Tenn.) after they had reached on back-to-back two out singles. After that, a pop-out promptly ended the series.

ETSU totaled seven hits in the effort — one each from Sisneros, Awtry, Webb, King, Noah Gent (Corryton, Tenn.), Cody Miller (Rocky Point, N.Y.) and Nick Iannantone (Plainfield, Ill.).

Miller’s single and walk today extends his hitting streak to 10 games and his reached-base streak to 16 games over 19 starts this season. Meanwhile, Sisneros and Iannantone have reached in 10 straight games. Garett Wallace (Sanford, Fla.) reached in 17 straight games prior to Sunday, which stands as the longest streak by a Buccaneer this season.

On the mound, Derek McCarley (Seymour, Tenn.) had six strikeouts over 2.2 innings. Trevor Hanselman (Tallahassee, Fla.) pitched one scoreless inning in the eighth.
