Senior lefty matches career-high with 8.0 innings

CHARLESTON, S.C. (April 21, 2023) – ETSU and The Citadel began their Southern Conference baseball series on Friday night with an entertaining pitchers’ duel, but the visiting Buccaneers would fall short by a 3-1 final at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in Charleston, S.C.

Making his first weekend start of the season, senior left-hander Colby Stuart (Elon, N.C.) performed well with a quality start. He matched a career-high 8.0 innings, allowing just three runs with no walks while scattering eight hits.

Stuart worked with an early 1-0 lead as ETSU scored a run in the fourth inning, but The Citadel singled home a run to tie it in the sixth. The turning point came all the way in the bottom of the eighth, as Travis Lott hit a two-run homer to put The Citadel up 3-1.

The Bucs brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but stranded the tying run at the plate. Citadel starter Sam Swygert went all 9.0 innings in the duel, allowing just one run on three hits.

ETSU’s fourth inning run came as Cody Miller (Rocky Point, N.Y.) reached on a one-out walk and moved up to second on a single by Cameron Sisneros (Littleton, Colo.). This set up a rare version of a sacrifice fly, as Garett Wallace (Sanford, Fla.) flied out to deep center field and allowed Miller to tag up at second. Miller sped to third and rounded for home as the cut off throw was offline.

Later in the ninth, Miller hit a one-out single to try and spark a rally, but a tough lineout to left field and a flyout to right field ended the contest. Miller, Sisneros and Jared Paladino (Levittown, N.Y.) accounted for ETSU’s hits.
