JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP)(Oct. 21) - Con Chellis kicked a 26-yard field goal with just over a minute left in regulation as East Tennessee squeezed by Furman 23-21 Oct. 21.

Chellis' last minute save atoned for an earlier missed extra point that would have tied East Tennessee (4-3, 3-2 Southern Conference) with Furman (6-2, 3-2) early in the fourth quarter.

The game was a seesaw battle between the two conference rivals, with each matching the other score for score.

East Tennessee State's Todd Wells couldn't miss, racking up 401 yards of total offense. The senior quarterback's 336 yards of passing made it the third time in his career that he had passed for over 300 yards.

After going into halftime tied at 14, Furman broke ahead in the third quarter with a 10-yard TD run by Louis Ivory. East Tennessee didn't answer the score until about halfway through the fourth, when Wells rushed eight yards for a touchdown.

Chellis missed the extra point, forcing the Buccaneers to give away the ball trailing 21-20.

But East Tennessee got the ball back after Furman went three-and-out. Keyandre Fenn returned the punt 51 yards, setting up Chellis' winning field goal three plays later.
