Bucs Hold Second Scrimmage of Fall

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 25, 2021) – The final scrimmage has come and gone for the ETSU football squad as the Bucs took the gridiron on Wednesday night at William B. Greene, Jr. Stadium.

With the scrimmage in the past, the Bucs are only 10 days away from the season opener at Vanderbilt on Saturday, Sept. 4 in Nashville, Tenn.

Offensive Highlights
Redshirt-freshman quarterback Tyler Riddell (Tampa, Fla.) took the bulk of the snaps in the second scrimmage, finishing the night with 200 yards passing and four touchdowns. Riddell found three different receivers for touchdowns, including Will Huzzie (Duluth, Ga.) for a pair of scores. Huzzie paced the team in receptions and receiving yards with five catches for 91 yards and two touchdowns. Huzzie and Riddell connected for a 60-yard touchdown strike midway through the scrimmage.

For the second consecutive scrimmage, freshman running back Bryson Irby (Douglasville, Ga.) found the seam for a big gain, bursting through the hole for a 58-yard gain. Irby ended the night with six carries for 64 yards. Trey Foster (Knoxville, Tenn.) led the team in rushing yards with 68 on 10 carries with two touchdowns. Junior tailback Jacob Saylors (Jasper, Tenn.) capped off the night with three rushing touchdowns.

Alongside Huzzie, wide receivers Isaiah Wilson (Norcross, Ga.) and Zailes Alexander (Johnson City, Tenn.) had big nights with a combined six catches for 114 yards.

Defensive Highlights
The Buccaneer defense ended the evening with 93 tackles, 4.0 sacks, 8.0 tackles for loss and six pass breakups. Thirty-five different players accounted for the 93 tackles.

Daniel Davila (Lebanon, Tenn.) led the charge with eight tackles and one tackle for loss. Deven Brantley (Riverdale, Ga.) was on his heels with seven tackles, including a team-best 1.5 tackles for loss and one sack.

Special Teams Highlights
Trace Kelley (Gallatin, Tenn.) finished the night 2-of-3 in field goals, connecting from 24 yards and 33 yards.
