ETSU Marketing & Analytics major sets program record with 23 tackles at The Citadel

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Sept. 14, 2022) – After receiving Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors on Monday, ETSU redshirt freshman linebacker Chandler Martin (Lithonia, Ga.) was named SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week, announced by the league office on Wednesday.

Martin, who set a program record with 23 tackles at The Citadel last Saturday, has generated a 3.32 grade point average while majoring in Marketing & Analytics. Martin broke Nakia Thomas’ mark of 22 tackles, set back in 1993 against Appalachian State.

Prior to Saturday’s contest in Charleston, Martin had totaled 13 tackles in first nine games before having 23 last Saturday. The 23 tackles are the most by a SoCon player since Western Carolina’s Rock Williams totaled 24 tackles at The Citadel back on Oct. 13, 2012. The 23 tackles are also tied for the most by an FBS and FCS player this year.

Martin is the first Buccaneer to receive the honor this season, while ETSU has earned the accolade 38 times since rejoining the SoCon in 2014-15.

ETSU gears up for its SoCon home opener this Saturday when the Bucs take on Furman. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. inside Greene Stadium.
