Dylan Lewellyn is entering his seventh season with the Buccaneers. Following a stint as the graduate assistant in 2015, then head coach Carl Torbush promoted Lewellyn to ETSU’s outside linebackers coach in 2016.

In his six seasons as the Bucs’ outside linebackers coach, Lewellyn has coached the likes of Austin Gatewood, Trey Quillin, Blake Bockrath and Colton Lakes. The 2021 spring unit was headlined by Bockrath, Di’Andre Davis and Lakes who finished the season with 38 combined tackles in six games. Lakes led the trio with 18 tackles, while Bockrath concluded the season with 16 and Davis with 14. Last season’s defense led the SoCon in scoring defense, allowing only 18.8 points per game. The rush defense also led the conference, allowing only 114.5 yards on the ground.

Lewellyn’s first two seasons (2015-16) were headlined by Gatewood and Quillin with 198 combined tackles, five forced fumbles and one interception. Add in Bockrath and Lakes for the 2017 season and the outside linebacker position was set. The four outside linebackers combined for 121 tackles, three forced fumbles and one interception. The unit also accounted for 6.5 sacks on the season. The 2017 defensive unit was one of the tops in the Southern Conference as the Blue and Gold ranked third in total defense (345.8). The Bucs also ranked third in the league in pass defense (172.5) and fourth in pass defense efficiency (131.9). As a unit, the Bucs held the opposition to 10 points or less four times, while holding Robert Morris (three points) and VMI (six points) without a touchdown. In the win over Robert Morris, the Blue and Gold totaled eight sacks and three forced turnovers, marking single-game highs since the program was reinstated in 2015.

Lewellyn has coached Bockrath into being named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team after totaling 57 tackles, nine tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and one forced fumble in 2017. Bockrath was also named Freshman All-American Honorable Mention by Hero Sports. In 2021, Davis earned SoCon All-Freshman honors under Lewellyn’s guidance.

Lewellyn played collegiately at Liberty from 2010-14 and was coached by former ETSU head coach Carl Torbush in 2012. The High Point, N.C. native played in 37 games (17 starts) for the Flames, while helping guide Liberty to four Big South Championship titles – including its first ever FCS Playoff appearance and playoff win over James Madison in 2014.

Lewellyn ranked fourth on the team in tackles in his senior season as he totaled 62 in 2014, while he posted a team-leading 16 tackles in a 56-31 win over Brevard on Sept. 13, 2014. The 16-tackle game marked the most by Liberty player since 2008. Lewellyn graduated in a senior class that compiled 38 wins over their career, which ranked fourth in school history.

Lewellyn received his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a minor in Education from Liberty. He currently resides in Johnson City, while his father Don played football at Guilford College and brother Bryant played at Liberty.
