JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 1, 2007) -- Riding an eight-game winning streak and enjoying a two-game lead in the Atlantic Sun Conference regular season standings, the ETSU men's basketball team will return home to face league rival Gardner-Webb Friday evening, as well as honor the fifth and final Top 5 fan favorite selection.
Former Buccaneer standout Tom Chilton burned the nets inside Brooks Gym from 1959 to 1961, scoring a remarkable 26.1 points per game. His per game scorning mark ranks five points better than the next nearest player, and his 1,801 points still stands fifth all-time, even though he played without the benefit of a 3-point line and did not play a full four-year career. Those numbers made Chilton an easy pick for ETSU fans, and the first 2,000 fans to enter Memorial Center will receive a free commemorative lapel pin designed to honor Chilton's No. 42 jersey.
As for the game itself, the Bucs (16-7 overall, 10-1 A-Sun) and Bulldogs (7-15, 5-6) will tip at 7 p.m., as the two teams rekindle what has become a significant rivalry in just two seasons. ETSU dropped G-W 66-63 in a hard-fought contest early in January, with senior Brad Nuckles (Council, Va.) leading the way in a winning effort thanks to a career high 31 points. The two teams are 2-2 all-time.
