JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 30, 2014) – After months of anticipation, ETSU fans were officially welcomed to Freedom Hall Thursday night as the Buccaneer men’s basketball team hosted a special Blue/Gold scrimmage game inside their new home.
The Bucs went through their traditional practice regimen as head coach Murry Bartow used the building’s public address system to explain the workout procedure, as well as take fans through a few of the team’s “go-to” plays.
While special contests and giveaways were part of the evening, the feature of the night was a 20-minute intra-squad scrimmage that saw the Gold team use an 11-0 run late in game to win 27-22. Junior forward Lester Wilson (Knoxville) led the way with a game-high 10 points.
“In a lot of ways this is the same team, with the same make up, the same goals and the same chemistry – it’s just a new year,” Wilson said. “We think this is going to be an advantage for us. Having so many parts coming back is the key.”
The Bucs do have many returning players on the perimeter, but it’s the team’s inside play that will be the biggest question as it begins the season. ETSU will get its first full game test on Monday, Nov. 3, when the Bucs host nearby foe Milligan College in an exhibition game at 7 p.m. inside Freedom Hall.
