MEMPHIS (January 8, 2018) – ETSU men’s basketball head coach Steve Forbes, the Buccaneers and Coaching for Literacy (CFL), announced Monday that they are partnering again for a third consecutive year by hosting a Fight for Literacy Game when the Bucs host VMI this coming Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
A Fight for Literacy Game brings coaches, players, and fans together in a common cause: ensuring our children can read.
Currently, 64 percent of American 4th graders are not reading at grade-level (Annie E. Casey Foundation). This lends to the staggering fact that 32 million American adults are functionally illiterate (National Center for Education Statistics). By hosting their own Fight for Literacy Game, East Tennessee State hopes to reverse these statistics.
“Success in education and economics is largely determined by a child’s ability to read,” said Forbes, who serves as a CFL Literacy Ambassador. “The fact so few read efficiently is alarming and something must be done. ETSU is honored to use our platform with Coaching for Literacy to help children nationwide.”
The Fight for Literacy Wears Green
To raise awareness about the issues connected to illiteracy, ETSU’s coaching staff will wear the Coaching for Literacy Green for Literacy awareness kit, showcasing a green tie produced by Peter Millar as well as a green lapel pin and wrist band.
“We want people to see the color green at sporting events and think ‘literacy advocacy’, the same way people see pink and think ‘breast cancer awareness’,” said Ryan Viner, Executive Director of Coaching for Literacy. “The more people aware of the issues connected to illiteracy the better chance we have to truly lower the illiteracy rate.”
East Tennessee State’s men’s basketball is set to host their Fight for Literacy Game against the Virginia Military Institute on January 13th inside the Freedom Hall Civic Center with tip-off scheduled for 4 p.m.
