ETSU hosts reigning OVC Tournament champion

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Dec. 10, 2021) – Following a week off for final exams, the ETSU men’s basketball team is back in action as the Buccaneers host reigning Ohio Valley Conference Tournament champion Morehead State on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. inside Freedom Hall.


ETSU Athletics is holding a Toy Drive Friday night as fans are encouraged to bring toys to the front entrance of Freedom Hall to be donated to Niswonger Children’s Hospital. 


  • ETSU is in the midst of a three-game homestand and sits 6-3 on the season.
  • The Blue and Gold opened the stretch of home games last Saturday with a 90-66 win over Lenoir-Rhyne.
  • The Bucs assisted on 24 of their 31 made field goals, marking just the eighth time since 2010 ETSU posted 24 or more assists in a single game.
  • ETSU ranks third nationally in free throw percentage (.814), while the Bucs have shot over 80 percent at the free throw line five times this season, including a season-best 90 percent (28-of-31) versus Lees-McRae.
  • Charlie Weber (Owings, Md.) has made 18 straight free throws over the last six games.
  • ETSU also ranks 19th nationally in offensive rebounds per game (13.7) and 27th in fewest personal fouls per game (13.9).
  • The Bucs have made at least one three-pointer in 1,069 straight games. 


  • Morehead State has won its last four games and enter Saturday’s contest with an overall record 6-3.
  • The Eagles are coming off a 71-66 win over Presbyterian on Monday night in Morehead, Ky. … Morehead State’s other wins during this run are against Georgia Southern, Kansas City and Arkansas State.
  • Morehead State is 4-0 at home and 1-3 on the road … The Eagles’ lone road win is a 75-51 victory at Arkansas State.
  • The Eagles are led by Johni Broome as he’s averaging 14.2 points and 9.8 rebounds, while shooting 55 percent from the field … Broome ranks third nationally in blocks (37).
  • Skyelar Potter and Tray Hollowell have combined for 44 of MSU’s 78 three-pointers as they each have netted 22 on the season.
  • As a team, the Eagles are averaging 68 points per game and shooting 45 percent from the field … Morehead State ranks sixth nationally in blocked shots per game (6.9).
  • Morehead State won the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament a year ago to secure the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament … The Eagles were picked to finish second in the league this season. 


  • The all-time series has been closely contested with Morehead State holding a slight 28-27 advantage.
  • ETSU has won the last three meetings – the most recent being a 78-68 victory on Dec. 17, 2016.
  • Morehead State’s last win in the series was on Nov. 12, 2013 when the Eagles won 71-63 in Johnson City.
  • ETSU won six straight in the series from 1976-78.
