ETSU holds Heroes Day promotion  

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Jan. 4, 2022) – The ETSU men’s basketball team opens 2022 by taking on league-leading VMI on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. inside Freedom Hall.


Wednesday is our annual Heroes Day promotion when the Bucs host VMI … Active and veteran servicemen and women, first responders and frontline health care workers receive free admission … For tickets, call 423-439-3878.


  • ETSU is coming off an 82-52 setback to Chattanooga last Thursday night where the Bucs dropped to 8-6 overall and 0-1 in league play.
  • Thursday marks the 34th SoCon home opener for the Blue and Gold with ETSU going 21-12 in the previous 33 … Since the Bucs’ return to the league in 2014-15, ETSU has won all seven conference home openers.
  • When it comes to the month of January, the Bucs play stellar basketball … Since 2015-16, the Blue and Gold have gone 40-9 (.813) in the month of January, while winning 30 of its last 34 games in January … The 40 wins during this span are the seventh-most in the country only behind Belmont (45), Gonzaga, Winthrop and Vermont (44) and Sam Houston State and Bucknell (41).
  • Through ETSU’s first 14 games, seven games have been decided by seven points or less and four by two points or less … The Bucs are 5-2 in those seven games decided by seven points or less and have split the four games decided by two points or less.
  • Since Feb. 16, 1987 in a game against Davidson, the Bucs have made at least one 3-pointer in 1,074 consecutive games ... ETSU was 0-for-8 in that 1987 game ... The Bucs currently rank as the fifth-longest streak in the NCAA, with UNLV topping the list with 1,143 games.
  • David Sloan has accounted for 32% of ETSU’s offense this season as he has scored 162 points, while his 60 assists have accounted for 152 points … 32 of Sloan’s assists have come on three-pointers and he has made 29 triples, which means he has a hand in 51% of ETSU’s threes this season … Sloan accounted for 54% of the Bucs’ scoring at Appalachian State (15 points scored, 21 off assists), 45% against Missouri State (20 points scored, 15 off assists), 41% at Georgia (24 points, 11 off assists) and 40% against Morehead State (12 points scored and 21 off assists).
  • In his last four games, Jordan King is averaging 15.3 points and shooting 55 percent from three (12-22), while Ty Brewer is averaging 15.3 points and 6.0 rebounds, while shooting 55 percent from 2-point range (22-40) … Ledarrius Brewer has scored in double figures in six of his last seven outings, averaging 13.1 points and 6.6 rebounds … David Sloan has dished out at least one assist in all 14 games this season and has recorded at least one assist in all 38 games played in an ETSU uniform.
  • The Bucs are 8-3 this season when attempting more shots and 5-2 when making more threes … ETSU is also 3-1 when making more free throws and 3-1 when attempting more at the charity stripe … The Blue and Gold are also 5-2 when winning the offensive rebound battle. 


  • VMI has won its last two games and enters Wednesday’s contest at 9-5 overall and 2-0 in SoCon play.
  • The Keydets picked up an 80-73 road win at Wofford on Dec. 29 and followed that up with a 76-67 home win over Furman on New Year’s Day.
  • Senior center Jake Stephens was just named SoCon Player of the Month for December and also earned Lou Henson National Player of the Week on Monday … For the month of December, Stephens averaged 21.6 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.8 blocks … For the week, Stephens posted 25.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game against Wofford and Furman.
  • For the season, Stephens is averaging 17.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game, while shooting 53 percent from the field, 43 percent from three and 86 percent at the free throw line.
  • Kamdyn Curfman leads the team in scoring (18.1), field goals made (89) and threes made (54).
  • As a team, VMI ranks second nationally in three-point field goals per game (12.8) and total threes made (179), third in three-point attempts (479), fifth in defensive rebounds per game (30.7), sixth in free throw percentage (80.4), ninth in total assists (246), 14th in field goal percentage defense (37.4), 19th in total rebounds (568) and 31st in three-point field goal percentage defense (28.4).
  • VMI is looking to go 3-0 in SoCon play for the first time since 1976-77.


  • Wednesday marks the 68th all-time meeting between the Bucs and Keydets with ETSU leading the series, 53-14.
  • The Bucs have won the last 12 games in the series, averaging a 16.8 scoring margin per victory during this run.
  • ETSU has won 22 of the last 23 in the series dating back to 1999.
  • The Bucs’ last loss in the series came on Jan. 17, 2015 when VMI won 85-79 in Lexington, while ETSU’s last home setback to the Keydets was on Jan. 2, 1999 (58-55).
