Junior Adam Chase named A-Sun Men’s Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the year

MACON, Ga. (Nov. 11, 2013) – A pair of ETSU cross country student-athletes captured Atlantic Sun Conference academic honors, including Men’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year for junior Adam Chase (Kingsport, Tenn.) and membership on the Women’s Cross Country Academic All-Conference Team for junior Jessica Palmer (Oak Ridge, Tenn.), the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Chase, a mathematics major, earned the honor by carrying a 4.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) in addition to his numerous athletic accomplishments this fall season. The Kingsport native was among ETSU’s top-two finishers in three of the five races this season, highlighted by leading the Buccaneers by placing third overall at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational on Sept. 20. The junior’s efforts in Blacksburg earned him A-Sun Runner of the Week accolades on Sept. 25.

Palmer, a chemistry major, gained acceptance onto the Women’s Cross Country Academic All-Conference Team by posting a 3.78 cumulative GPA and by being a critical component for the Bucs’ team success this season. The Oak Ridge native placed among ETSU’s top-five runners in each of the five races this year including placing in ETSU’s top-three in two meets. The junior also saved her best for the brightest stage yet this season by running a collegiate-high 19:03.52 at the A-Sun Championship on Nov. 2 which helped the team finish second overall out of 10 teams.

This award marks the second time Chase has garnered Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors this year after notching Men’s Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year on May 20. For Palmer, this is the first time she has received such an honor.
