BLACKSBURG, Va. (Sept. 19, 2019) – The ETSU men’s and women’s cross country teams returns to action this Friday as the Buccaneers head to Blacksburg for the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational.

The Bucs are back in competition for the first time since the season-opening meet back on Aug. 30 in Boone, N.C.

ETSU was scheduled to run in the USC Upstate Eye Opener last Friday but it got postponed to Saturday due to inclement weather.

Eight women will be running this weekend for the Bucs, while the men’s team will feature 10 runners.

Redshirt junior Malick Gemechu (Johnson City, Tenn.) and sophomore Genevieve Schwarz (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) led the Blue and Gold in the season opening meet in Boone … Gemechu finished the 8K course in 25:48.91 and  Schwarz clocked in at 20:07.55 for the 5,200m race.

“It's been an interesting week for the teams since having our meet cancelled last week, and the adjustments we've had to make in our training and preparation,” said head coach George Watts. “It's not an ideal situation, but we need to handle the adversity in a professional manner and compete hard tomorrow. We will have the bulk of our athletes competing, but will still be missing some key people who we expect to have back as we head into the month of October competitions.

“This weekend will leave us six weeks away from hosting the Southern Conference Championships on November 2nd.  The cross country season really begins this weekend.”

Friday’s meet will be held at the Buford Meredith Cross Country Course in Blacksburg, Va.

The women will run a 6K starting at 6 p.m., while the men will follow with an 8K at 6:40 p.m.

Joining ETSU and Virginia Tech in this week’s meet are: American University, Clemson, Duke (women only), Florida State, Hollins (women only), Miami (Fla.) and Radford.

Florida State’s men are ranked No. 2 in the South Region and Virginia Tech is No.  4 in the Southeast Region.

This will be the same course the 2019 ACC Championships will be held on Friday, Nov. 1.

Admission is free … Parking will be available in the "Cage" lot (if coming in on Southgate Drive, turn left on Duck Pond Drive and take the third left into the Cage lot). There is gate at back of lot that fans can go through and head down to the start line from there (approximately 300 meters).

The Bucs will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 5 when the Blue and Gold run in the Louisville Classic, which will be held at Tom Sawyer Park.
