Bucs head to Indiana for final tune-up before SoCon Championships

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (Oct. 18, 2019) – The ETSU men’s cross country team will face its most difficult test of the season as the Buccaneers gear up for the Pre-National Invitational on Saturday morning from the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.

The Blue and Gold, who moved up four spots to No. 6 in the latest south regional rankings, are coming off a fifth-place showing two weeks ago at the Greater Louisville Classic.

Malick Gemechu (Johnson City, Tenn.) led the Blue and Gold in Kentucky with an 18th-place finish after turning in a personal best time of 24:08.7 on the 8K course.

Senior Adam Bradtmueller (Sarasota, Fla.) also turned in the best performance of his collegiate career as he placed 21st with a mark of 24:16 … The Buccaneer senior clocked in nearly 50 seconds faster than his previous best 8K time, which was set at the 2016 SoCon Championships.

Overall, eight of the 10 Buccaneers runners set personal bests at the meet.

This race serves a yearly preview of the NCAA Championship course for the best men's and women's collegiate cross country runners in the nation.

This marks the first time ETSU is running in the meet since 2008.

Three teams anked in the top-five and 11 in the top-30 make up the field.

Saturday’s races will feature 57 teams and 602 athletes on the men’s side (38 teams are featured in the blue race).

“The men will compete at the very competitive NCAA Pre-National meet this weekend as there are 11 top 30 teams in the country scheduled to toe the line,” said head coach George Watts. “This is the first time since I've been at ETSU that we've competed in a meet of this caliber. It will be challenging, and this is a meet they've wanted to race in. I look forward to seeing how we handle a national-level meet.”
