ETSU men’s cross country heads to Virginia for SoCon Championship

LEXINGTON, Va. (Oct. 29, 2021) – The ETSU men’s cross country team heads to Virginia as the 2021 Southern Conference cross country championship will be held at the Lexington Golf and Country Club on Saturday.  

RACE INFO

  • VMI is hosting the conference meet from the Lexington Golf and Country Club.
  • The Buccaneer men will run an 8K starting at 10:45 a.m.
  • Furman has won the last eight team conference championships with Appalachian State being the last team other than the Paladins to finish first back in 2012.
  • ETSU has won 15 SoCon titles, including eight straight from 1978-85.
  • The last time the SoCon meet was held in Lexington was in 1999.
  • The Bucs won the 1992 meet in Lexington with Seamus Power winning the third of his four straight titles … ETSU also won the 1984 race in Lexington, along with Brian Dunne winning the first of his two cross country championships.

ABOUT THE BUCS

  • ETSU is coming off a team win last time out at the Golden Eagle Invitational when the Bucs had four runners place in the top 10, defeating host Tennessee Tech by 19 points, 26 to 45.
  • The Bucs enter the conference championship ranked No. 11 in the USTFCCA South Region.
  • Matt Scarr (Wambersal, NSW, Australia) was the top collegiate runner at the Golden Eagle Invitational as he led the Blue and Gold with a time of 25:25.0 … Scarr has paced ETSU in all four regular season meets this season, turning in his fastest time earlier this month at the Live in Lou Classic where he clocked in at 23:58.20.
  • Scarr’s time in Louisville is the second-fastest 8K result among SoCon runners this season.
  • Myles Stoots (Mobile, Ala.) and Evan Guzman (Franklin, Tenn.) turned in their best collegiate finishes last time out in Cookeville … Stoots finished fourth (25:39.5) and Guzman placed fifth (25:43) … Guzman made his collegiate debut two weeks ago.
  • Brayden Hamblen (Rock Falls, Ill.) has the fifth-fastest mark of 24:08.70, also set in Louisville, while Stoots has the 13th top mark of 24:47.60.

THE FIELD

  • All 10 SoCon schools will be running this Saturday in Lexington.
  • Furman is ranked 16th USTFCCCA Coaches Poll, while the Paladins are first in the Southeast Region and ETSU is 11th in the South Region.
