Five track & field student-athletes earn CSC Academic All-District honors

Brown, Lord, Guzman, Maduwa and Parrilla receive the accolade

GREENWOOD, Ind. (June 2, 2023) – Five ETSU track & field student-athletes received 2022-23 Academic All-District honors from College Sports Communicators (CSC), which was announced by the organization earlier this week.

The 2023 Academic All-District® Men’s and Women’s Cross Country / Track & Field Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances in the athletic realm and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.

Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second and third-team Academic All- America® honorees will be announced June 28.

Individuals who received the award needed to have a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher, while also participating in at least 50 percent of the team’s competitions. In addition, student-athletes have to be at least a sophomore academically and athletically.

Brown, who has a 3.805 grade point average and earned a master’s degree in public health, won a gold medal at the 2023 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship. The Radford, Va. native, who became ETSU’s first female SoCon champion in the event, posted a mark of 42.69m. Also, at the same meet, Brown earned a silver medal with a personal best mark in the hammer with a distance of 51.30m. In April, Brown also won gold in the hammer at the Catamount Classic with a mark of 51.17m.

Lord has a 3.90 grade point average while majoring in biology-biomedical. The Buccaneer distance runner won her first collegiate Southern Conference individual gold medal at the 2023 outdoor meet in May. Lord won the 800m with a time of 2:08.68, becoming the fifth Buccaneer female athlete to win gold in the event at the SoCon Championship. Lord also ran a leg in the 4x400m relay that won a bronze medal at the championships. During the outdoor campaign, Lord set a personal best in the 1500m (4:33.37) at the 49er Classic where she placed second, while she finished second in the 800m at both the USC Open Outdoor and Catamount Classic. During the indoor season, Lord finished second in the 800m at the SoCon Championship, while also leading the 4x400m relay and distance medley relay team to third-place finishes at the meet. Lord also ran in all six cross country meets for the Blue & Gold this past fall – setting a personal best 6K time (22:09.1) at the Vertcross – where she finished sixth.

Guzman has generated a 3.867 grade point average while majoring in management. The Franklin, Tenn. native is coming off a stellar 2022-23 campaign where he won a silver medal at the SoCon Cross Country Championship, while he won a bronze in the mile at the 2023 SoCon Indoor Championship, a silver in the 10K and a bronze in the 5K at the SoCon Outdoor Championship. During the cross country season, Guzman also won the VertCross Invitational for his first career collegiate cross country title, while he set a personal best 10K time at the NCAA South Regional with a mark of 30:22.5. In the track & field season, Guzman captured three gold medals – winning the 1000m at the VMI Invitational, 5000m at the Tennessee Invite and the 1500m at the Catamount Classic.

Maduwa, who wrapped up his final season in the Blue & Gold, majored in sport management with a 3.564 grade point average. Maduwa won the 800m at the SoCon Indoor Championship with a time of 1:50.12 and also ran a leg of the Bucs’ DMR that won silver. At the SoCon Outdoor Championship, Maduwa won a pair of bronze medals – in the 800m and 4x400m relay. During the outdoor campaign, Maduwa won gold in the 800m at the USC Open and the Catamount Classic, while winning a pair of golds in the indoor season. Maduwa won the 800m at the VMI Invitational and at the South Carolina Invitational.

Parrilla has a 3.841 grade point average while majoring in sport management, parks & recreation. The Knoxville native scored at both the SoCon Indoor and Outdoor Championships this past season. At the indoor championship, Parrilla finished second in the 800m and the DMR, while placing fourth in the 4x400m. At the outdoor championship, the Buccaneer distance runner won silver in the 800m and bronze in the 4x400m.
