Johnson City, Tenn. -- The 17th-ranked East Tennessee State mens golf team finished 11th at the 2001 Puerto Rico Classic after firing a three-round 897 (301-299-297). The event was held at the Rio Mar Country Club in Palmer, Puerto Rico.
The Bucs were led by senior Chris Wisler who tied for 12th after carding a three-round 218 (72-76-70). Wisler began the last day tied for 23rd, but improved with a two-under par 70 in the final round. Senior Pat Beste tied for 31st with a 223 (78-71-74).
Georgia Tech won the team title with a 3-under par, 861 (296-283-282). Clemson, the first-round leader, finished second (289-291-282--862) while the University of Minnesota (296-289-280--865) placed third. The Golden Gophers shot a tournament-low 280 in the final round.
Clemsons Lucas Glover won the individual medal with a three-round 205 (68-70-67) to finish 11-under par. Minnesotas Wilhelm Schauman finished second, five shots back (73-70-67--210). Georgia Techs Bryce Molder (71-71-70--212) was third and Northwesterns Luke Donald (76-70-68--214) finished fourth.
ETSU will return to action at the Birkdale Collegiate Classic in Charlotte, N.C. from March 5-6.
