Men's Golfers Finish Eighth in Atlanta Intercollegiate

Johnson City, Tenn. (May 10, 2002) -- The East Tennessee State men's golf team concluded their 2002 spring season by finishing eighth in the Atlanta Intercollegiate, hosted by Georgia State University from Eagle's Landing Country Club in Stockbridge, Ga. The Bucs shot their best round of the tournament on Friday, carding a 291. ETSU finished at 24-over-par (294-303-291=888) as a team in the two-day, three-round event. Auburn took home the team championship, finishing at 8-under-par (293-282-281=856), five strokes ahead of second-place Florida. Buccaneer freshman Marco Trejos (San Jose, Costa Rica) led the Bucs by finishing in a tie for 20th at 4-over-par (70-80-70=220). He shot his second 70 of the tournament in Friday's final round, moving him 12 spots up the leaderboard. Graeme McDowell of UAB held on to the lead to win medalist honors, finishing at 19-under-par. ETSU junior James Johnson (Barbados) finished just one stroke behind Trejos, finishing in a tie for 23rd (72-75-74=221) at 5-over-par. Freshman Jeremy Hobson (Thonotasassa, Fla.) shot the best round of his collegiate career on Friday, shooting a 2-under-par 70 to lead him to a tie for 29th at 7-over-par (78-75-70=223). Junior Adam Riddering (Maple Grove, Minn.) was the next ETSU finisher, tying for 41st (75-76-77=228) at 12-over-par after shooting a 4-over-par 77 in Friday's final round. Freshman Noel Kavanagh (Westport, Ireland) rounded out ETSU's day on the links, shooting a 7-over-par 79 on Friday to finish in a tie for 54th (77-77-79=233).
