Johnson City, Tenn. (Feb. 18, 2002) -- The East Tennessee State men's golfers are in third place in an 18 team field after the first round of the Charleston Southern University Kickoff Classic, Monday from Coosaw Creek Country Club in Charleston, S.C.
The Bucs shot a 295 on the first day of play, trailing first-round leaders Charleston Southern by 10 strokes and second-place Elon by eight strokes.
Senior James Johnson (Barbados) and freshman Cennydd Mills (Cardiff, Wales) lead the Bucs afer round one, sitting in a tie for 11th after firing matching 72's. The duo is four shots off of the lead, held by Matt Anderson of Florida Atlantic and Mark Hunsicker of Elon who shot opening-round 68's.
Freshman Noel Kavanagh (Westport, Ireland) was the next ETSU finisher, tying for 24th after shooting a first-round 75. Freshman Jeremy Hobson (Thonotosassa, Fla.) finished in a tie for 28th after carding a first-round 76. Freshman Marco Trejos (San Jose, Costa Rica), playing as an individual, shot a first-round 76 to tie Hobson in 24th. Senior Adam Riddering (Maple Grove, Minn.) was the final Buccaneer finisher, tying for 45th after shooting a first-round 78.
The Bucs will return to action tomorrow morning for the final round of the Charleston Southern Kickoff Classic from Coosaw Creek Country Club in Charleston, S.C.
